                A brief history of this Malseed Family.

                                Ireland to Australia 

                                                           1849 - 2024

 

James and Anne Malseed (nee Thompson)  are the parents of some of the first Malseed family members to arrive in Australia. They had ten children, all born in Co. Donegal, Ireland. The Irish Malseeds were Protestants with Church of Ireland leanings in the Northern part of Ireland and later on some Methodist Church leanings in Australia.

James and Anne are buried together along with one of their daughters Mary (Doak) in the St Columbs Church of Ireland graveyard in Rathmullan, Co Donegal. Buried on either side of them are their eldest son William and second youngest daughter Margaret.

 John (1) Malseed was born circa 1824 in Co. Donegal, Ireland. His parents were James and Anne Malseed (nee Thompson) He was a carpenter and married Elizabeth Wallace (pictured right) on 15 February 1849 at Upper Fahan, Donegal, Ireland.

 

He migrated on 18 September 1849 to Victoria, Australia on board the Courier at age 25 as an assisted immigrant with his wife of 6 months Betty. John was the first member of the Malseed Family to arrive in Australia and was then followed by other family members. 

 

Roy (3)  (son of Thomas (2) Malseed)  wrote in 1965 that his grandfather John Malseed joined in the Gold Rush of the early 1850s and returned "with gold on his shoulder under his shirt, which he used to buy his first land".    

 

John and Betty moved from Portland to Whittlebury, then later, in 1886, selected land at Myamyn.                                                 

 

A. Eliza Ann (2) Malseed was born in 1850 at Portland, Victoria, Australia .

 She was baptized in 1850 at St Stephens Church of England, Portland, Victoria, Australia.

 She died in 1853 at Portland, Victoria, Australia; three-years-old . She was buried at St Stephens Church of England,.Portland , Victoria, Australia.

 

B. Mary (2) Malseed  was born in 1851 at Portland, Victoria, Australia and was baptized at the Presbyterian Church, Portland, Victoria, Australia. Mary married Thomas Edmund Adamson in 1879 at Portland, Victoria, Australia. Mary died on 21 September 1882. Thomas then married  Marys cousin, Fanny Ann Malseed a daughter of James and Eliza Malseed of Mt Richmond, Victoria, Australia. A son of Thomas and Fanny, Charles Wesley Adamson was killed in action at Gallipoli on 6 December 1915.  Lest We Forget.

 

 C. James Wallace(2) Malseed was born in 1852 - ?

 

D. John (2) Malseed was born in 1853 at Portland, Victoria, Australia. John married Mary Satchell, daughter of Jesse Satchell and Helen Brown, in 1880. He was a labourer in Myamyn as a young man. A son of John and Mary, David Stanley Malseed was killed in action at Polygon Wood, Ypres, Belgium on 20 September 1917.  Lest We Forget.

F. Sarah Anne (2) Malseed. (1858 - 1861)

 

G. Robert (2) Malseed was born at Portland, Victoria, Australia in 1857 and died on 9 August,1928. He married Sarah Cowan (1859 -1925).

 

H.Thomas (2) Malseed was born at Portland, Victoria, Australia in 1860 and died on 7 January, 1923. He married Isabella Cowan. (1864-1921).

 

I. Catherine (Kate) Isabella Adamson (2) Malseed (1862 -1929)  Catherine married George Robert Adamson (1862 - 1950)

 

J. William Stewart (2) Malseed was born in 1864 at Portland, Victoria, Australia; the last of the children (all Australian-born  of John and Betty (Elizabeth Wallace) Malseed. He was a farmer at Myamyn. He married Sarah Thompson Malseed, daughter of James Malseed and Eliza Ann Malseed of Mt Richmond, in 1896; they were cousins. (Pictured)

In fact, Sarah's parents, James Malseed (snr) and Eliza Ann Malseed were also cousins. Together William and Sarah would have six children. As of 1917, William Stewart Malseed and Sarah Thompson Malseed lived at Myamyn, Victoria, Australia.

William Stewart Malseed died on 31 January 1926 aged 61 years and is buried in the Myamyn / Condah cemetary alongside his wife Sarah Thompson Malseed who died on the 9th of June 1947 at the age of 80. 

1.William Stewart(3) Malseed was a Methodist. He was born on 13 May 1897 at Myamyn, Victoria, Australia.

William married Janet Olive Oldham In 1926 at Victoria, Australia. As of 1942, William Stewart Malseed lived at Willatook, Victoria, Australia;

 

2.Mary lrene (3) Malseed was born in 1899 at Myamyn, Victoria, Australia. She married William Garfield Patterson in 1935.

 

3.James Richmond Powell (3) Malseed was born in 1900 at Myamyn, Victoria, Australia. He married Esther Sarah Rundell

 in 1927 at Victoria, Australia. He died in 1985 at Portland, Victoria, Australia; 85-years-old.

 

4.Henry Charlton (3) Malseed was also known as Charlie.  He was born in 1902 at Myamyn, Victoria, Australia. He married Jessie Ingleton In 1933 at Horsham,  Victoria, Australia. 

 

5.John Eric (3) Malseed was born in 1904 at Portland, Victoria, Australia. He died in 1957 at Koroit, Victoria, Australia; 53-years-old.

 

6.Charlotte Jean (3) Malseed was born In 1906 at Portland, Victoria, Australia. She married George Francis Barr in 1942 at  Victoria, Australia.

 

Henry Charlton Malseed (3) was born on the 14 February, 1902 and died at Macarthur on 24 May, 1976.

 

Henry Charlton (Charlie) Malseed was an original pioneer at "Breakaway Creek" near Condah, Victoria where as a young man he lived in a one roomed weatherboard hut and developed the family property known as "Orana". He was a keen sportsman excelling at Athletics and Football. He was a regular competitor in the annual Condah Gift athletics carnivals and also played in a winning Grand Final with the Myamyn Rovers Football Club in the Heywood and District Football League.

 

He initially worked his land with a team of horses and in later years modernised to the tractor. He milked cows and raised pigs and poultry before switching to Sheep and Beef cattle in the 1960's.

 

Charlie married Jessie Ingleton in 1933 and they had two children. He continued to develop and expand the family property until his death in 1976.

 

(4) Kevin Charlton Malseed; born 13 Ferbruary 1936. He married Helen Jessie Black of Heywood, Victoria on 17 November 1956.

 

(4) Eunice Anne Malseed was born 11 April 1939 and married Barry Lindsay Monaghan. 

Kevin Charlton Malseed  was born at Hamilton 0n 14 Februaury 1936 and died at Warrnambool on 4 January, 2014.

 

He was educated at Breakaway Creek primary school and later attended Hamilton High School.

Kevin married Helen Jessie Black from Heywood on 17 November,1956 and they had four children. Tony, Jenny, Daryl & Paul.

 

He was a well known Hereford cattle breeder and a prominent country footballer. He ran and further developed the family farm "Orana" initially in partnership with his father and later in partnership with two of his sons.

 

(5) Anthony Ross (Tony) Malseed, born in 1959.  

(5) Jennifer Joy Malseed, born in 1960, died 17 July 1998. 

(5) Daryl John (Huck) Malseed, born in 1961, died 27 February 2014.

 

(5) Paul Charlton Malseed, born in 1964.

Anthony Ross (Tony) Malseed was born at Hamilton, Victoria in 1959.

Tony Malseed was educated at Heywood Primary and Secondary schools. He left school in 1976 at the age of 17 to join his father and grandfather on the family farm "Orana" at Breakaway Creek. He was a keen athlete, footballer and horseman.

He travelled to Canada & Germany for 13 months with the International Agricultural Exchange Association in 1982/83 to live and work. He was awarded a Diploma in Agriculture in 1983.

He farmed in partnership with his family from 1978 until 2004 when he moved across to the Thoroughbred horse industry where he has worked in a variety of roles. More recently he has lived and worked in China, managing and training thoroughbreds. He has also visited England, Ireland and Canada to learn more about the thoroughbred horse industry in those countries. 

Tony also played a leading role with other family members in the Malseed Family 150th anniversary Reunion held in Portland on Saturday, 3rd April 1999. Tony has also recently spent some time in Donegal, Ireland further researching his family history and meeting other members of the Malseed family.
